Hand seal - Shuin
〘noun〙① Buddhist term. Various shapes made with the fingers of both hands when chanting a spell with faith in its power. Making a mudra with your fingers. Also, particularly in Shingon Buddhism, the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas make mudras with their fingers to express their original vows. Mudra. *Konjaku (around 1120) Volume 6 "We have only depicted the images of seven Buddhas, but today we do not know the dignity and hand mudras of 993 Buddhas." ② To stamp the shape of your hand with vermilion ink or similar as evidence. 〘 noun 〙 A simple piece of evidence. Also, a small item delivered or handed over as a token of one's feelings. ※Shiji Sho (1477) 7 "As soon as it became clear that the drunken hand had been paid, I broke the hand that had been given to me as a token, and did not blame anyone."

Te-in [hand seal]

〘 noun 〙 The act of applying vermilion or ink to the palm of one's hand and stamping it on the characters of a document. Also, the resulting handprint. It is said to represent the sender's strong will and desire. It is often used to stamp oaths .

て‐じるし【手印】

〘名〙 簡単な証拠となるもの。また、気持のしるしとして届けたり、手渡したりするちょっとした品物。※史記抄(1477)七「酒手をば償われた事あらはやぢゃほどに、手しるしに、をこされたる物をへし折て、責めうともせぬぞ」

て‐いん【手印】

〘名〙 掌(てのひら)に朱または墨などを塗って、それを文書の字面に押すこと。また、その手形。差出人の強い意思や願望を表わすものとされる。起請文(きしょうもん)に押されることが多い。しゅいん。
