...The German Ludwig von Siegen (c. 1609-80) discovered this technique before 1642, and Prince Ruprecht (1619-82) improved it. This technique was favored in the Netherlands as a method of reproducing paintings under Cornelis Dusart (1660-1704), and in 18th-century England it produced reproduction printmakers such as John Raphael Smith (1752-1813), James MacAdell (1728-65), and Thomas Watson (1748-81), and was even called "English printmaking manière anglaise." Paintings by J. Martin, Turner, and Constable were also reproduced, but the popularity waned in the second half of the 19th century. ...
