...In Christian legend, the carnation is said to have grown from the tears of the Virgin Mary as she saw Christ being crucified, and was considered a symbol of maternal love. Thus, in 1907, American Ann Jarvis proposed the custom of wearing a red carnation on the chest of a child whose mother is still alive, and a white carnation on the chest of a child whose mother has died, on Mother's Day (the second Sunday in May). It is said that the red center of this flower is due to the blood that dripped from Christ's body, but in a legend related to the Ronsecco family in Italy, the white flower was stained red with blood when the warrior Orlando was stabbed in the chest by an enemy. ...
