Diabetes is currently divided into three main types: (1) insulin-dependent diabetes (type I diabetes), (2) non-insulin-dependent diabetes (type II diabetes), and (3) other types of diabetes. Insulin-dependent diabetes develops suddenly, and ketone bodies tend to accumulate in the blood as metabolic products (ketosis). It is a severe form of diabetes that is life-threatening unless insulin is administered as part of treatment. It is more common in young people, but can occur at any age.
