1838‐1907 Romanian painter. After making a name for himself as an icon painter at a young age, he received a scholarship to travel to Paris in 1861, where he studied Romantic painting and then settled in Barbizon. He painted peasant life and landscapes with a brushstroke-like quality, and began exhibiting at the Salon (official exhibition) in 1868. In his home country, he was greeted with mixed reviews as a pioneer of new techniques. He returned to France in 1876, where he interacted with Impressionist painters. In 1877, he served as a war painter during the Russo-Turkish War, leaving behind many sketches. Not naturally suited to large-scale paintings, he left behind many masterpieces, including quick-drawn, improvised portraits of ordinary people and genre paintings, which showed his excellent drawing skills.
