Also written as katsuko-odori. A type of elegant drum dance. Found in Mie, Ishikawa, and Fukui prefectures, it is danced to the sound of katsuko (a taiko drum commonly known as kanko) hanging from the chest during Bon and Jizo-bon festivals, and to pray for disasters and rain. In the Middle Ages, a performing art in which young boys danced while beating katsuko attached to their chests with a stick became popular. The name is thought to be due to the similarity of form, but the form of the art is different, and a group of young people carrying beautiful himorogi (a sacred tree) on their backs dance to the accompaniment of short songs that retain the old style of the early modern period or earlier.
