Petrus Christus

Dutch painter. Apprentice of Jan van Eyck. Became a master in Bruges in 1444. He is said to be the first Dutch painter to use perspective horizons and vanishing points in an empirical way. His religious paintings were influenced by the Flemalle painters and Weiden, but his expression is restrained and refined. No one before him had divided a room into sections and painted a half-body portrait in it. The spatiality and concreteness of his work had a great influence on subsequent generations. His representative works are "Mary and Saints" (Städel Museum, Frankfurt) and "Portrait of Sir E. Graemestone" (National Gallery, London). He died in Bruges.

オランダの画家。ヤン・ファン・アイクの弟子。1444年ブリュージュでマイスターとなる。経験的なやり方で遠近法的な水平線と消点を用いたオランダ最初の画家といわれる。宗教画ではフレマールの画家やワイデンの影響があるが、その表現は自制のきいた洗練されたものとなっている。画面に部屋を区画し、そこに半身の肖像画を描いたのは彼以前には見当たらない。その空間性と具体性とは後続の世代に大きな影響力をもった。代表作は『マリアと聖者たち』（フランクフルト、シュテーデル美術館）、『サー・E・グレイムストーン像』（ロンドン、ナショナル・ギャラリー）。ブリュージュで死去。
