French neoclassical architect. Born in Dormans, Marne. Moved to Paris to train under François Blondel. Though he had never visited Italy, he was deeply influenced by Italian architecture, and Piranesi's prints of ancient Roman ruins in particular became his source of architectural imagery. After 1771, he was commissioned to design works by Madame du Barry, the favorite of Louis XV, and built a villa in Loubouchènes, which is decorated with such a variety of motifs that it is said to be a specimen of French neoclassicism. He also designed many other residences, including the Hôtel Terrusson in Paris (1780), and in recent years his reputation has been enhanced by his collection of architectural sketches based on his own original concepts, "Architecture from the Viewpoint of Art, Customs, and Law" (1804).
