Concert of Europe

Concert of Europe
A system of international dispute resolution through consultation and cooperation among the great powers seen in Europe after the Napoleonic Wars. It was characterized by the absence of a permanent body, and by the fact that special international conferences were held whenever a problem arose, and that a solution was sought through mutual coordination among the nations. The system was made up of the great European powers of Austria, France, Great Britain, Russia, and Prussia (later Germany), and later Italy. Smaller nations that were directly involved in the problem sometimes participated in the conferences, but matters were decided by agreement and compromise between the great powers.
