Restoration Historiographical Society

Japanese: 維新史料編纂会 - いしんしりょうへんさんかい
Restoration Historiographical Society
A government organization established for the purpose of collecting and compiling historical materials related to the Meiji Restoration. It was established on May 10, 1911 by Imperial Ordinance No. 145, but it was the successor to the private organization Shomeikai, which was established the previous year by Inoue Kaoru, Yamagata Aritomo and others for the same purpose. Inoue Kaoru, followed by Kaneko Kentaro, became president, and the secretariat was located within the Ministry of Education. It was originally scheduled to last for 15 years, but continued until the abolition of the government system on May 8, 1942. Its operations passed through the Minister's Secretariat, the Social Education Bureau, and the Textbook Bureau, before being taken over by the Historiographical Institute of the University of Tokyo in April 1949. It published the Restoration Historical Materials Outline (10 volumes, including the documents and cited sources from 1846 to 1871), the Great Japan Restoration Historical Materials (19 volumes), and others, and the number of manuscripts reached 4,180. During World War II, the government published "The History of the Meiji Restoration" (5 volumes, with 1 appendix volume) and other works with the aim of clarifying the national polity.
