…The company was founded in 1955 by director George Devine with the main objective of introducing new plays from Japan and abroad, especially those that were difficult to stage at commercial theaters, and began performing the following year at the Royal Court Theatre in the Chelsea district of London. One of the plays on the program that year, Look Back in Anger by unknown newcomer John Osborne, became the catalyst for the British theater innovation movement. New works by A. Wesker, J. Arden, NF Simpson, E. Bond, and others were subsequently introduced to the London theater scene from the company. …
