Teshima

It is an island between Shodo Island and Nao Island in the northern part of Kagawa Prefecture. It belongs to Tonosho Town, Shozu District. Its area is 14.50 square kilometers. It is a typical mesa-shaped lava plateau, and the plateau around its highest point, Danyama (340 meters), is well cultivated. In particular, in the Karato-oka settlement, rice paddy farming is more developed than in the lowland coastal areas, thanks to spring water from the tuff breccia layer below the andesite. This tuff breccia is called Teshima stone, and since it is easy to process and grows moss easily, it is used in Kagawa Prefecture for stonework such as lanterns. Abuzaki, which protrudes into the northern part of the island, is a treasure trove of Tertiary fossils, especially shell fossils. The main settlement is Ieura on the northwest coast, which has a sandy beach and a number of private lodgings for swimming. The eastern half of the island, along with its affiliated island Otejima, is part of the Setonaikai National Park. There are regular ferry services from Ieura Port and Karato Port to Tonosho Port, Uno Port, and Takamatsu Port. Illegal dumping of industrial waste has been taking place here since 1978 (Showa 53), and residents have been protesting, but in 1990 (Heisei 2) the Hyogo Prefectural Police arrested the contractor, attracting nationwide attention. In 1993, Teshima residents applied for national pollution mediation, and mediation work has been ongoing since then, but in 2000 the matter was settled when Kagawa Prefecture agreed to remove the industrial waste and the governor apologized to the residents. 香川県北部、小豆(しょうど)島と直(なお)島間にある島。小豆(しょうず)郡土庄(とのしょう)町に属す。面積14.50平方キロメートル。典型的なメサ型溶岩台地で、最高点の檀山(だんやま)（340メートル）を中心とした台地面はよく耕されている。とくに唐櫃岡(からとおか)集落は、安山岩の下の凝灰角礫(かくれき)岩層からの湧水(ゆうすい)で低地海岸部よりも水田耕作が発達している。この凝灰角礫岩は豊島石とよばれ、加工しやすくコケもつきやすいので、香川県では灯籠(とうろう)など石細工物に利用している。島の北部に突出する虻崎(あぶざき)は第三紀の化石の宝庫で、とくに貝の化石が多い。北西岸の家浦(いえうら)が中心集落で砂浜海岸もあり、海水浴用の民宿も発達している。島の東半部は属島小豊(おて)島とともに瀬戸内海国立公園の一部。家浦港と唐櫃港から、土庄港、宇野港、高松港への定期船便がある。1978年（昭和53）から産業廃棄物の不法な投棄が行われ、住民の抗議運動が続いていたが、1990年（平成2）に兵庫県警が業者を摘発、以後、全国的な注目を集めた。1993年、豊島住民は国の公害調停を申請、それ以降調停作業が続いていたが、2000年、香川県が産業廃棄物の撤去を行うことと、知事が住民に対し謝罪したことでいちおうの決着をみた。人口1066（2009）。
