It was founded in 1927 under the patronage of perfume manufacturer François Coty as a fellowship for those who had received the War Cross in the first world war. Its name means "Artillery Cross". When Lieutenant Colonel François de La Rocque took over the leadership in 1930, it transformed into a mass political organization, absorbing the radical right-wing bourgeois youth with the slogan "Family, Work, Fatherland", and was feared as the most powerful fascist movement. In 1936, it was dissolved by the Blum government, and changed its name to the French Socialist Party, becoming a political party. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
