Tokyo Story - Tokyo Story

Japanese film. Shochiku production released in 1953 (Showa 28). Directed by Ozu Yasujiro. Written by Ozu Yasujiro and Noda Kogo. An elderly couple living in Onomichi, played by Ryuchishu Ryu and Higashiyama Chieko, come to Tokyo to see their son and daughter. The children welcome their parents warmly, but not as warmly as their parents expected, and sometimes even seem to get in the way. In the end, the person who looks after them most kindly is the wife of their second son, who was killed in the war, played by Hara Setsuko. The story depicts the anxiety of a seemingly solid family slowly crumbling, and the desire to maintain familial love. These are consistent themes in all of Ozu Yasujiro's works, and Tokyo Story can be considered a culmination of them all. The film is composed in a strict, consistent style throughout the screen, and the director's masterful emotional control ensures that ordinary people are truly lovable and good people, imprinting themselves in the viewer's mind. It has gradually become known worldwide, and is now recognized as one of the greatest masterpieces in the history of world cinema.

日本映画。1953年（昭和28）公開の松竹作品。監督小津安二郎(おづやすじろう)。脚本小津安二郎・野田高悟(こうご)。笠智衆(りゅうちしゅう)と東山千栄子(ちえこ)が演じる尾道(おのみち)に暮らす老夫婦が、息子や娘たちに会うために東京にやってくる。子供たちは両親を温かく迎えるが、親が期待していたほどではなく、ときにはちらっと、邪魔にするような風情も感じさせる。結局一番親身になって世話をしてくれたのは、原節子が演じる、戦死した次男の嫁だった、という物語である。一見堅固な家族が徐々に崩れてゆく不安と、家族愛を維持したいという願いが描かれる。これらは小津安二郎の全作品に一貫する主題だが、『東京物語』はその集大成ともいえる作品である。画面の隅々まで厳密に一定のスタイルで構成され、見事に情感をコントロールした演出によって、普通の人々がそれぞれ実に愛すべき良き人々として、見る者の心に刻み込まれる。世界的に徐々に知られていき、いまでは世界映画史上でも屈指の名作の一本と認められている。
