Endotoxin

Toxins secreted by bacteria outside the cell as part of their survival strategy are called exotoxins, whereas toxins released from the cell wall of bacteria after the bacteria die are called endotoxins. A typical example is the lipopolysaccharide (LPS, a complex of glycoproteins and lipids) of gram-negative bacteria. The lipid portion, lipid A, is important for activity. LPS that enters the bloodstream binds to LPS-binding protein (LBP). The LPS-LBP complex is recognized by CD14 and Toll-like receptor (TLR) on white blood cells, transmitting a signal into the cell and producing inflammatory cytokines.

細菌が生存戦略の一環として菌体外に分泌する毒素をエキソトキシン(外毒素)というのに対し，菌体が死んだ後に菌体の細胞壁などから遊離する毒素をエンドトキシン(内毒素)という．典型的なものとして，グラム陰性菌のリポ多糖(LPS，糖タンパク質と脂質の複合体)がある．脂質部分のリピドAが活性に重要である．血管内に入ったLPSはLPS結合タンパク質(LBP)に結合する．LPS-LBP複合体は白血球上のCD14とToll-like receptor(TLR)に認識され，細胞内に情報が伝わり炎症性サイトカインが産生される．
