Untei (English spelling)

Japanese: 芸亭 - うんてい(英語表記)Untei
Untei (English spelling)
It is pronounced "untei." At the end of the Nara period (the year of establishment is unknown), the scholar Isonokami Yakatsugu turned his old house in Nara into a temple and placed this library in one corner of the building. In the latter half of the Nara period, Yakatsugu witnessed the process of the Fujiwara clan gaining control of power and the corruption of Buddhism as it became linked with politics. In his later years, he aimed to explore new ideas by unifying Buddhism and Confucianism, and opened Uitei as a place for reading, reflection and discussion. It is thought that people with the same aspirations gathered to learn and discuss. It is said to be Japan's first public library, and although it was not a closed organization solely for the Mononobe clan to which Yakatsugu belonged, given its nature it would be more appropriate to call it a members-only library. It was lost at some point after Yakatsugu's death. [Reference] Isonokami Yakatsugu
