Nikkatsu Film Co., Ltd. is the oldest comprehensive film company in Japan, including production, distribution, and exhibition. It was established in 1912 through the merger of M. Pathé, Yoshizawa Shoten, Fukuhodo, and Yokota Shokai, and was originally called Dai-Nippon Film Machinery Manufacturing Company, but later changed its name to Nippon Katsudo Film Co., Ltd. and then Nippon Katsudo Film Co., Ltd. It produced many stars, from Onoe Matsunosuke, the first Japanese film star and period drama star who built the foundation of Nikkatsu films together with director Makino Shozo, the father of Japanese cinema, to Ishihara Yujiro, who was said to be the biggest star after World War II.

日本活動写真株式会社の略称で，製作，配給，興行を含む総合的な映画企業としては日本でもっとも古い。1912年，Mパテー，吉沢商店，福宝堂，横田商会の合併によって生まれ，最初の社名は大日本フィルム機械製造会社であったが，これを日本活動フィルム株式会社に，次いで日本活動写真株式会社に改称。日本映画の父･牧野省三監督とともに日活映画の基礎を築いた日本映画のスター第1号であり時代劇スター第1号の尾上松之助から，第2次世界大戦後最大のスターといわれた石原裕次郎に至るまで数々のスターを生んだ。
