Railway luggage - Tetsudo Motsu

Japanese: 鉄道荷物 - てつどうにもつ

This refers to small items transported by rail, and the Japanese National Railways handled baggage, small packages, newspapers, magazines, and mail. Baggage is items necessary for a passenger's trip that cannot be carried on board the train and is sent as luggage. By showing a ticket, the fare is cheaper than that of regular small packages, and the luggage arrives at roughly the same time as passengers. Small packages are general luggage other than baggage, weighing 30 kg or less each. Railroad baggage is generally called passenger car service, and in the past it was transported by baggage cars attached to passenger trains, but later it was often transported by special baggage trains, and in the areas around large cities it was often transported by trucks.

鉄道により輸送される少量物品をいい，日本国有鉄道では手荷物，小荷物，新聞･雑誌，郵便物を取り扱ってきた。手荷物とは，旅客の旅行に必要な物品で車内に持ちこめないものを託送するもので，乗車券を呈示することにより一般の小荷物より割安な運賃となっており，旅客とほぼ同時期に到着するものであった。小荷物は手荷物以外の一般荷物で，1個の重さ30kg以内となっていた。鉄道荷物は一般に客車便と呼ばれ，古くは旅客列車に連結された荷物車により輸送がなされたが，その後は荷物専用列車などによるものが多くなり，また大都市周辺ではトラック輸送によるものも多かった。
