But the Ishiyama Uprising was an inevitable confrontation between Nobunaga, the winner of the Sengoku war and seeking to establish a unified system of plundering surplus produce, and Hongan-ji, a religious lord who controlled the Hongan-ji territory and the network of temple towns in the Kinai region, which were controlled by an alliance of monks and local lords through a multi-layered system of jobs, and who had elevated Hongan-ji to the central position of the anti-Nobunaga front.
