A former town in Higashikubiki County in southern Niigata Prefecture. Occupying the eastern part of the Higashikubiki Hills, it is primarily engaged in rice farming, with forestry also taking place. It is an area with deep snow, with many houses built in the Chumon-zukuri style. Matsunoyama Onsen and Tonoguchi Onsen are both located here. Landslides occur frequently. A bus service is available from Tokamachi City. In April 2005, it was incorporated into Tokamachi City along with Kawanishi Town, Nakazato Village, and Matsushiro Town in Higashikubiki County. 新潟県南部,東頸城(ひがしくびき)郡の旧町。東頸城丘陵東部を占め,米作を主とし林業も行う。深雪地で中門造(ちゅうもんづくり)の家が多い。松之山温泉,兎口(とのくち)温泉がある。地すべりの発生が多い。十日町市からバスが通じる。2005年4月中魚沼郡川西町,中里村,東頸城郡松代町と十日町市へ編入。86.31km2。3061人(2003)。
