A German chamber ensemble known for performing with original instruments. It was formed in 1964 by F. Maier as a recording group for Harmonia Mundi. Its repertoire is baroque and classical works, and it aims to perform in a way that is appropriate to the era, including instruments and playing style. Its tone is modest but has a deep flavor, and its representative works include Bach's Brandenburg Concertos and The Art of Fugue, and Handel's Organ Concerto. Since the late 1970s, it has also included works by Beethoven and others, and has even performed the Eroica Symphony (1803-04) with the same size ensemble as the group at the time.
