A general name for a genus of the family Heptranchias in the order Heptranchidae, or the name of one of its species. The sharpnose sevengill shark, H. perlo , is the only known species in the Heptranchias genus. The sharpnose sevengill shark has one dorsal fin and seven pairs of gill slits, and is the same as the sharpnose sevengill shark, which belongs to the same family, but the sharpnose sevengill shark can be distinguished by its sharp snout and uniform body color (the sharpnose shark has a round snout and a spotted body). It mainly lives on the deep sea floor at a depth of about 400 meters, but can sometimes be seen in coastal areas. It reproduces viviparously and gives birth to about 20 young. It is found in the Pacific Ocean south of Hokkaido and the Sea of Japan in the waters near Japan, but is distributed in the deep seas of tropical waters all over the world. It grows to about 1.4 meters in length and is used as an ingredient in paste products. It is listed as Near Threatened (NT) on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List (as of September 2021). エドアブラザメ属HeptranchiasにはエドアブラザメH. perlo(英名sharpnose sevengill shark)1種のみが知られている。
