The world's largest American cosmetics manufacturer, it is known for its door-to-door sales. Its headquarters are in New York. It was founded in 1866 by David H. McConnell, a door-to-door salesman. The company name comes from the Avon River, which flows through Shakespeare's hometown. It increased sales through skillful door-to-door sales activities using housewives, and in the 1950s it became the world's largest cosmetics company. In 1954 it expanded overseas to Venezuela and Puerto Rico, and has since expanded its scope of operations, and currently sells to over 30 countries, including Japan, with overseas sales accounting for over 60% of the company's total.
