An evergreen small shrub of the Ericaceae family (APG classification: Ericaceae). The stems creep along the ground and the branches point upwards. The leaves are elliptical with rounded tips, leathery and almost hairless. In July and August, pale yellow, funnel-shaped, bell-shaped flowers measuring 2.5-3.5 cm in diameter bloom with 10 stamens. It grows in the high mountains of the Chubu region of Honshu and Hokkaido, and is widely distributed in the cold zone of East Asia.
