… Proletarian literature is a defining feature of 20th century Swedish literature. However, apart from the precocious female poet Karin Boye (1900-41), proletarian literature in Sweden was not revolutionary in character, driven by ideology, as in other countries, but was merely the literature of people from the proletariat who acquired the skills to be poets and writers through self-study. Therefore, it is not appropriate to immediately evoke an international character from the term proletarian when referring to Swedish literature. …
