Okehem

Japanese:
Okehem
A composer who represents the first period of the Netherlandish school. Also known as Ockeghem. Birthplace unknown. He served three French kings, starting with Charles VII, and was active in the French court, which regained its vitality after the end of the Hundred Years' War (1453). In 1465 he became the conductor of the court chapel, and later traveled to Spain and Flanders. He spent his later years in Tours, where he died. Although only a few of his compositions have been preserved to this day, the majority of his works are religious music, and his masses written for the royal chapel are particularly important. These works inherit the style of the circular mass established by Dufay, and are characterized by strict polyphony in which each voice creates its own long-lasting melodic line. The complex techniques he used in his compositions had a considerable influence on the next generation, such as Josquin des Prez and Pierre de la Rue (c. 1460-1518). He also left behind the oldest surviving polyphonic requiem (around the 1480s), as well as motets and secular chansons. His death was mourned by many writers of the time, and Erasmus and others dedicated memorial poems to him.
