A perennial plant of the Nyctaginaceae family (APG classification: Nyctaginaceae). Native to tropical America. The roots are thick and taprooted, and the stems are also thick and branched, reaching a height of 1 meter. The leaves are triangular-ovate with pointed tips and grow in pairs. The flowers have no corolla, and the tubular calyx is colored and opens like a morning glory flower. At the base of the flower there is a green involucre that looks like a calyx. Horticultural species come in red, white, peach, yellow, and striped colors, and continue to bloom from summer to autumn. They bloom in the evening and wilt during the day, hence the English name four-o'clock. The seeds are black, and when split open, they contain a powdery white endosperm. For cultivation, they bloom in summer if sown in spring, so they are treated as annuals. In warm areas, the tuberous roots overwinter and grow and bloom again the following year. [Keiji Kanda February 17, 2021] Mirabilis was first recorded by French-born Dutch botanist Carolus Clusius (1526-1609), who gave it the name Admirabilis peruviana around 1576 as a Peruvian variety. It reached China by the end of the 16th century, and was introduced to Edo in Japan during the Genroku period (1688-1704). Kaibara Ekiken's Kafu (1695) lists red and yellow flowers. During the Edo period, the seeds were used as a substitute for face powder, and the roots were used in Orchid medicine under the name Yarappa. In Brazil, the whole plant is used for stomach pains and diarrhea, and the roots are used as a folk remedy for diarrhea and edema.
