An inlet of the Atlantic Ocean on the east coast of Canada. It is surrounded by the islands of Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and the Canadian mainland, and the St. Lawrence River flows into it. There are large islands such as Prince Edward and Anticosti in the bay, and glacial landforms can be seen everywhere along the coast. Between December and April, it is covered with drift ice, making navigation almost impossible. In 1534, the Frenchman J. Cartier was the first white person to reach this bay, and the day of his exploration fell on the Feast Day of St. Lawrence, so the local name was given to it.
