…Although it is abbreviated as EC, it became part of the European Union (EU) that was created by the Maastricht Treaty in 1992. The Council, which is the legislative body of the three communities, and the Commission, which is the executive body, were unified into a single EC Council (commonly known as the Council of Ministers) and a single EC Commission by the Fusion Treaty signed in April 1965, and the three communities were structurally unified on July 1, 1967, and thereafter came to be called the European Community. By July 1968, the EC had completed a customs union and implemented a common agricultural policy, and since the 1970s, it has launched a common trade policy and European Political Cooperation (EPC) as a mechanism for coordinating foreign policies while retaining diplomatic sovereignty to the member states. …
