A general term for small wild cats, excluding domestic cats, belonging to the Felidae family of the Carnivora order, subfamily Felinae. Approximately 29 species are found all over the world, except Antarctica, Australia, New Zealand, New Guinea, Celebes and its eastern islands, most of the Philippines, mainland Japan, Madagascar, the West Indies, and islands in the Arctic. Most species are 34-110 cm in body length and 11-60 cm in tail length, but the lynx Felis lynx can reach a body length of 130 cm. The large puma F. concolor (illustration), which resembles a female lion, is 96-196 cm in body length and 53-79 cm in tail length, but is a member of the Felis genus, and the Iriomote cat Mayailurus iriomotensis is a separate genus, although it is called a wildcat.
