1857‐1923 Dutch painter. Born in Rotterdam, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague, where he was taught by Willem Maris and others. Although he distinguished himself early on with a series of paintings on the subject of military training, such as Light Cavalry, he moved to Amsterdam in 1886 after a stay in Paris, and also enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts there. While in Amsterdam he had close ties with the literary figures of the "Eighties Movement," and portrayed contemporary life with vibrant and bold brushstrokes, becoming a representative figure among a group of young painters (commonly known as the "Amsterdam School" as opposed to the "Hague School," which mainly painted landscapes) who also sought subject matter in urban customs.
