Painful

A type of dialogue in Kabuki theatre. It refers to a long speech made up of a string of hanging words, mainly spoken by the lead actor in an aragoto (rough drama). It is based on the traditional Japanese performing art of reciting words or songs at length, and is a transformation of the tsuranegoto (linked words) used in Sarugaku and Ennen (long-term entertainment). It is an art form that showcases the actor's eloquence, and typical examples include the long speech on the hanamichi in "Shibaraku" and the fast-talking long speech in "Uirouri". In later generations, the term tsurané also came to be used to refer to "wari-dai" (lines shared between two or more actors) or "wataridai" (lines shared between two or more actors) in sewa-kyogen (traffic drama), as well as the beautifully written long speech commonly referred to as "yakuharai" (warding off evil spirits). Kawatake Mokuami, a kabuki and kyogen composer from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period, demonstrated his talent in works such as "Five Men of the White Waves."

歌舞伎(かぶき)劇の台詞(せりふ)の一種。主として荒事(あらごと)の主役が述べる、懸詞(かけことば)を連ねた長台詞をいう。日本の芸能古来のことばや歌を長々と朗唱する様式に基づき、とくに猿楽(さるがく)、延年の技法の連事(つらねごと)（連詞）が転化したもの。俳優の雄弁術を聞かせる芸で、『暫(しばらく)』の花道のそれや、『外郎売(ういろううり)』の早口ことばの長台詞などは代表的な例。後代には、世話狂言で一連の台詞を2人以上で分担して述べる「割り台詞」「渡り台詞」や、俗に「厄払(やくはら)い」といわれる美文調の長台詞もつらねとよぶようになった。幕末から明治の歌舞伎狂言作者河竹黙阿弥(もくあみ)は『白浪五人男(しらなみごにんおとこ)』などでその才能を示している。
