A perennial plant of the Ranunculaceae family. It grows in the shade of trees in mountainous areas, but is often forced and grown in frames or other containers as decorative flowers for the New Year. The rhizomes are short and somewhat thickened, with numerous dark brown fibrous roots. The leaves are tripinnately compound. The base of the petiole is membranous and envelops the stem. In the wild, beautiful yellow flowers grow singly at the top of the stem along with new leaves in spring. There are many horticultural varieties, including those with white flowers, those with thin petals, and those with large blooms. The rhizomes and roots are considered cardiac stimulants and diuretics. The European species A. vernalis has red flowers and is used medicinally as a substitute for digitalis. It is widely distributed in the temperate zone of East Asia.
