A military chronicle about the Jōkyū War. It was written in the mid-Kamakura period. The author is unknown. It is known as one of the "four battle chronicles" along with "Hōgen Monogatari," "Heiji Monogatari," and "Heike Monogatari." It is the most detailed description of the war and has great historical value. It is also characterized by its critical view of retired Emperor Gotoba and favorable view of Hojo Yoshitoki. The popular version is in two volumes, and begins with Emperor Gotoba's character and accession to the throne, and describes the cause and progress of the Jōkyū War, up until the end of the war when retired Emperor Tsuchimikado was exiled to Tosa. There are many variant versions, and the Jikoji version is older than the popular version, and shows a unique philosophy, such as starting from the order of Buddhism and royal law. The Maeda version was compiled in the late Kamakura period, and the "Jokyu Heianki" belongs to this lineage. The "Jokyu Gun Monogatari" is also a variant of the "Jokyuki" and was compiled in the early Edo period. A good published version is the "Jokyuki" annotated by Yasuaki Matsubayashi (Shinsen Nihon Koten Bunko).
