Greenaway

British film director. Born in London. Aiming to be a painter, he held his first solo exhibition in 1964, but switched to film after seeing Bergman's The Seventh Seal. From 1965, he worked for the Central Intelligence Agency as a documentary editor for 11 years, while also making experimental films. He won the BAFTA for The Falls (1980). After Murder in the English Garden (1982), he turned to theatrical films, releasing works such as Zoo (1985), The Belly of an Architect (1987), and Falling in Love (1988), earning acclaim for his brilliant yet intellectual images, backed by his extensive knowledge of art in general. Other works include The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover (1989), The Book of Prospero (1991), a film adaptation of Shakespeare's The Tempest, The Baby of Macon (1993), and Peter Greenaway's Pillow Book (1996). He also plans and organizes art exhibitions.

Greenaway

A British female picture book author. Born in London. She was a representative figure in the British picture book world in the late 19th century. She depicted children's lives in best-selling works such as Under the Window (1878) and The Book of Kate's Birthday (1880). The Greenaway Medal, a British children's literature award, is named after her.

英国の映画監督。ロンドン生れ。画家を志し，1964年に初個展を開くが，ベルイマンの《第七の封印》を観て映画に転向。1965年より11年間，中央情報局でドキュメンタリーの編集に携わるかたわら，実験映画を制作。《The Falls》（1980年）で英アカデミー作品賞を受賞。《英国式庭園殺人事件》（1982年）以降劇場用映画に転じ，《ZOO》（1985年），《建築家の腹》（1987年），《数に溺れて》（1988年）などを発表，芸術全般にわたる該博な知識を背景とした絢爛かつ理知的な映像で評価を得る。ほかに《コックと泥棒，その妻と愛人》（1989年），シェークスピアの《テンペスト》を映像化した《プロスペローの本》（1991年），《ベイビー・オブ・マコン》（1993年），《ピーター・グリーナウェーの枕草子》（1996年）などがある。美術展の企画・構成も手がけている。
