Hidene Kawamura

Japanese: 河村秀根 - かわむらひでね
Hidene Kawamura

A scholar of Japanese classics in the mid-Edo period. The second son of Kawamura Hideyo (1695-1771), a samurai of the Owari domain. His pen name was Kiminori and he went by the pen name Ritsuan. He studied under Tada Yoshitoshi (1698-1750) and Yoshimi Yoshikazu, and researched the Six National Histories. His main work, Shoki Shuge (published 1785?-1806?), 30 volumes and 20 books, is one of the pinnacles of Shoki research in the Edo period, and was completed by his second son Masune (1756-1819) in honour of his will (the name of his eldest son Shigene (1749-1768), who died young, is also added as a reviewer in the published version). In 1777 (An'ei 6), someone falsely accused the shogunate of plotting treason, and he and Masune were arrested and sent to Edo. The following year, in 1778, the suspicion was cleared and he returned to Nagoya. He died on June 24, 4th year of Kansei, at the age of 70. His grave remains in the Horin-ji Cemetery in Heiwa Park, Higashi Ward, Nagoya. His manuscripts and books are kept at the Nagoya Municipal Tsurumai Central Library. Kawamura Masune was a successful Confucian scholar, and made many achievements in the fields of tradition and systems. His pen name was Kendou. Hidene's older brother Hidekai (1718-1783) was also a Japanese classics scholar.
