Kawaharada

A district of Sado City, Niigata Prefecture. Until Sado City was established in 2004, it was the centre of the southern part of Sawata Town, Sado County. Formerly Kawarada Town. It was the administrative centre of Sawata County when Sado Province had a three-county system, and in the Middle Ages, it was home to Shishi Castle, the residence of Honma Sado no Kami. It remains the centre of the wider Sado region, home to Sado High School and the Remote Island Development Centre. National Route 350 runs through the area, and it is a key transport hub with a Niigata Kotsu bus terminal, and is a transfer point for the Osado Loop, Kosado Loop, and Ogi Lines. There is also a sports ground and a swimming beach on the coast.

新潟県佐渡市(さどし)の一地区。2004年（平成16）佐渡市が成立するまでは佐渡郡佐和田(さわた)町南部の中心地。旧河原田町。佐渡国が三郡制であったときの雑太(さわた)郡の行政の中心地で、中世は本間佐渡守(ほんまさどのかみ)の居城獅子(しし)ヶ城があった。いまも佐渡高等学校、離島開発総合センターなどのある佐渡広域圏の中心地。国道350号が走り新潟交通のバスターミナルのある交通の要衝で、大佐渡回り、小佐渡回り、小木(おぎ)線などの乗換場である。海岸には総合グラウンドや海水浴場もある。
