An industrial city that developed at the confluence of the Bílina and Labe (Elbe) rivers in northern Bohemia, Czech Republic. In German it is called Aussig an der Elbe. Population 97,000 (1996). A key transportation point connecting with Meissen, a customs office was established here as early as the 10th century. It was elevated to city status during the reign of Přemysl Otakar II (reigned 1253-78). It is also known as the site of an ancient battle in 1426, when the Hussite army led by Prokop Holy (?-1434) clashed with the army of the Margrave of Meissen and won.
