1830‐99 Belgian (Flemish) poet. Born in Bruges as the son of a gardener. He studied theology and became a Catholic priest. After working as a teacher at a seminary, he served as a priest in Bruges and Kortrijk from 1865. He devoted himself to writing poetry from his days as a teacher, and in works such as Flowers of the Cemetery (1858), Poems, Songs and Prayers (1862), Wreath of Hours (1893), and Poetic Lines (1897), he sang praises to God and nature and passionate love for his hometown in a simple style that made full use of the Flemish dialect, and he came to be revered as a master of modern Flemish lyric poetry.
