Belgian (Flemish) poet. Born in Bruges as the son of a gardener. He studied theology and became a Catholic priest. After working as a teacher at a seminary, he served as a priest in Bruges and Kortrijk from 1865. He devoted himself to writing poetry from his days as a teacher, and in works such as Flowers of the Cemetery (1858), Poems, Songs and Prayers (1862), Wreath of Hours (1893), and Poetic Lines (1897), he sang praises to God and nature and passionate love for his hometown in a simple style that made full use of the Flemish dialect, and he came to be revered as a master of modern Flemish lyric poetry.

ベルギー(フランドル)の詩人。植木屋の子としてブリュージュに生まれた。神学を修めてカトリックの聖職者となり，神学校の教師を経て，1865年からブリュージュとコルトレイクで司祭を務めた。教師時代から詩作に励み，《墓地の花》(1858)，《詩･歌･祈り》(1862)，《時の花冠》(1893)，《詩線》(1897)などで，神と自然への賛美，郷土への熱烈な愛情をフランドル方言を駆使した簡素なスタイルでうたい，フランドル近代抒情詩の巨匠と仰がれるにいたった。
