Jaipur (English spelling)
The capital of the eastern state of Rajasthan in northwest India. It was built in 1727 by Rajput king Sawai Jai Singh II and was the capital of the Jaipur Princely State (→Indian Princely State) until 1947. It is famous as a planned city with all the houses painted pink, and is also commonly called the Pink City. The old city is surrounded by a fort, and the buildings with uniform facades stand in a grid-like layout. In addition to the Jantar Mantar (→Jaipur Observatory, a World Heritage Site in 2010), an open-air astronomical observatory built in the 18th century, the old city is home to the royal palace (City Palace), Hawa Mahal (Palace of the Winds), Nahargarh Fort, and Hindu temples, and was registered as a World Heritage Site in 2019. It is a key point for air and land transportation, and the commercial, industrial, and financial center of the state. It is a thriving city in industries such as machinery, metal, and glass, as well as handicrafts such as hand weaving and jewelry making. Population: 3,046,163 (2011).

インド北西部,ラージャスターン州東部の州都。1727年にラージプートの王サワイ・ジャイ・シン2世によって建設され,1947年までジャイプル藩王国(→インド藩王国)の首都であった。家々の壁をピンク色で統一した計画都市として有名で,俗にピンクシティーとも呼ばれる。旧市街は城塞で囲まれ,碁盤目状に区画された街なかに,統一されたファサードの建物が立ち並ぶ。旧市街には 18世紀に建設された野外の天文観測所ジャンタル・マンタル(→ジャイプルの観測所。2010世界遺産)のほか,王宮(シティー・パレス),ハワマハル(風の宮殿),ナハーガー・フォート,ヒンドゥー寺院などがあり,2019年世界遺産の文化遺産に登録された。航空・陸上交通の要衝で,州の商工業,金融の中心地。機械,金属,ガラスなどの工業や手織物,宝石細工などの手工芸が盛ん。人口 304万6163(2011)。
