Katsuragawa River

Japanese: 桂川 - かつらがわ
Katsuragawa River
A river that flows through the southeastern part of Yamanashi Prefecture. It is the upper reaches of the Sagami River, and is 53 km long. It originates from Lake Yamanaka at the northeastern foot of Mt. Fuji and flows northeast, then turns east at Otsuki City and enters Kanagawa Prefecture. The wide river terraces formed by the ejecta of Mt. Fuji are important places of life in the Gunnai region, which has little flat land, and are the locations of the central urban areas of Tsuru City and Otsuki City. As it flows rapidly up to Otsuki City, and collects many springs and has a large flow rate, a waterway power plant was built there early on. National highways, railways, and the Chuo Expressway run along the river, making it a transportation route.

Katsuragawa River

A river that flows south through the southwestern part of Kyoto City. It is part of the Yodo River system. Its upper reaches are called the Oi River and the Hozu River, and it becomes the Katsura River near Arashiyama and flows out into the Kyoto Basin. It then flows south and joins the Uji River and Kizu River near Yamazaki and into the Yodo River. Its total length is 114 km. The coastal plain was developed early on, and remains of the jori system can still be seen. The river water was also used for washing Yuzen dyeing. Katsura Imperial Villa is located on the right bank of the midstream, and factories are located near the confluence with the Yodo River. Housing development has progressed and the coast has undergone significant transformation.
