A mammal of the Ursidae family in the carnivora order (illustration). A medium-sized bear found in wide distribution in North America from Alaska to central Mexico. It has a body length of 1.5 to 1.8 meters, a shoulder height of about 1 meter, and weighs 120 to 150 kg. It is also called the American black bear, but its body color varies from black to brown to white. It lives alone in forested areas and has a vast home range of up to 48 km in diameter.
