Christian scholar and evangelist. Born in Tosa Province (Kochi Prefecture). Graduated from Kochi Kyoritsu School and Doshisha Normal School. While still a student, he was baptized by R.B. Greenan. He also studied at Union Theological Seminary in New York. Recognized by theologian Uemura Masahisa, he became a professor at Meiji Gakuin and vice principal at Tokyo Theological Seminary, where he trained evangelists and taught theology. During this time, he became a director of the Japan Young Men's Christian Association, and in 1906 launched its journal, Pioneer. In 1914, he published Civilization Review, and in the same year, Daikichirou Tagawa's "People Who Do Not Know How," published in the same magazine, was charged with blasphemy against the Imperial family. On his deathbed, he is said to have expressed a desire to attempt to write in English on the topic of "grace and morality." <Works> "Kashiwaien Complete Works" (6 volumes, 5 sequels, 1 supplementary volume)

キリスト教学者,伝道者。土佐国(高知県)生まれ。高知共立学校を経て同志社普通部を卒業。在学中,R.B.グリナンから受洗。ニューヨークのユニオン神学校にも学ぶ。神学者植村正久に認められ,明治学院教授,東京神学社の教頭となり,伝道者養成と神学教育に当たる。この間,日本基督教青年会同盟の主事となり,明治39(1906)年に機関誌『開拓者』を創刊。大正3(1914)年には『文明評論』を発刊,同6年に同誌掲載の田川大吉郎の「方法を知らぬ民」が皇室冒とく罪に問われた。死の床で,「恩寵と道徳」をめぐる英文著述を試みたいと述べたという。<著作>『柏井園全集』(全6巻,続篇5巻,別巻1巻)
