Kitaibaraki [city] - Kitaibaraki

Japanese: 北茨城[市] - きたいばらき
Kitaibaraki [city] - Kitaibaraki
A city in the northeastern tip of Ibaraki Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1956. Most of the city is mountainous in the southern part of the Abukuma Highlands, and the main urban areas of Isohara, which developed due to the shipment of coal from the Joban Coalfield, Otsu-machi, a fishing port, and Hiragata-machi along the Joban Line that leads to the Pacific coast, have developed. Fishing, mainly bottom trawling and sardine prong netting, and seafood processing are thriving. All coal mines were closed by 1973. Instead, an industrial complex was created in Isohara to promote the coal-producing region, and electrical and chemical factories were established there. Izura is known as the place where Okakura Tenshin, Yokoyama Taikan and others had summer homes, and is home to the Izura Institute of Art and Culture of Ibaraki University. The Joban Expressway runs through the city. Damage occurred within the city during the Great East Japan Earthquake. 186.80 km2 . 47,026 people (2010).
