...They also played a part in the slave trade through wars with the smaller countries around them. The Nupe kings are called Etsu, and their origins are said to date back to around 1530. According to their oral traditions, before that time the Nupe were not unified, were weak, and were subordinate to the Igala kingdom in the south, and were its tributary state.
