Kashiwa [village] - Kashiwa

Japanese: 柏[村] - かしわ
Kashiwa [village] - Kashiwa
A village in Nishitsugaru County, western Aomori Prefecture. Population 4,949 (1995). Located in the central Tsugaru Plain, on the alluvial plain on the west bank of the Iwaki River, over 75% of the land is made up of rice paddies and apple orchards. It was once a marshland covered with reeds, but in 1662 (Kanbun 2), it was converted into rice paddies as part of the first new rice field development under direct management by the Tsugaru Domain, and was called Hirosu Shinden. It is a grain-producing region in the prefecture that is less affected by the prevailing easterly winds, and apple cultivation has been carried out on the natural levees since the early Meiji period. In Kuwanokida, the central settlement, there is an apple tree that is said to have been planted in 1878.
