A perennial plant of the Asteraceae family, native to tropical Asia. It was cultivated in Japan, but in southern Kyushu it has become naturalized and is found growing in clusters in wetlands. The base of the stem is woody and grows at a slight angle, producing branches 40-50 cm tall. The leaves are oblong, thick and soft, with purple undersides. From spring to summer, the tips of the branches produce yellow-red heads of tubular flowers, each just under 1 cm in diameter. The Japanese name comes from the fact that it has long been cultivated in Suizenji, Kumamoto City.
