A Roman soldier. He accompanied L. Sulla on an expedition to the East. He became consul in 74 BC, and thereafter served as a Roman military commander in the East, fighting against Mithradates VI of Pontus. By 70 BC he had won the war, and he administered the provinces of Bithynia and Pontus well, and he himself amassed great wealth. After a counterattack by Mithradates, he handed over command to Pompey (Pompey the Elder) in 67 BC. In his later years, he lived a lavish lifestyle and enjoyed literature.

古代ローマの軍人。 L.スラに従い，東方に遠征。前 74年の執政官 (コンスル ) となり，以後ローマ軍司令官として東方でポントスのミトラダテス6世と戦った。前 70年までに勝利を得て，ビチュニア，ポントスの属州民に善政を施し，みずからも巨額の富をたくわえた。ミトラダテスの反撃にあったため前 67年に指揮権をポンペイウス (大ポンペイウス) に譲った。晩年は豪奢な生活をおくり，文芸を愛好した。
