Stephanites and Ichnerates (English spelling)

Japanese: ステファニテスとイクネラテス（英語表記）Ta kata Stephanitēn kai Ichnēlatēn

The Greek version of the Sanskrit Panchatantra, a book of monarchical science in the form of animal fables. It was translated into Pahlavi in the 6th century, into Syriac at the end of the same century, and into Arabic in the 8th century. In the 11th century, a Greek version was created by Symeon Set from the Arabic version entitled Kalila and Dimna. At that time, the names of the two jackals in the Arabic title were changed to Stephanites and Ichnerates. [Watanabe Kinichi]

動物寓話の形式をとった君主学の書であるサンスクリット文学の《パンチャタントラ》のギリシア語版。6世紀にパフラビー語訳，同世紀末にシリア語訳，8世紀にアラビア語訳されたのち，11世紀にシュメオン･セトにより，《カリーラとディムナ》と題されたアラビア語版からギリシア語版がつくられた。その際アラビア語版の題名であるこの2匹のジャッカルの名が，ステファニテスとイクネラテスと変えられた。【渡辺金一】
