A philosopher from the late ancient Rome. Born into a noble Christian family, he held important positions under the Ostrogothic king Theodoric, including consul, senate president, and chancellor, but was imprisoned and executed for conspiring against the king through ties with the Byzantine Empire. He wrote De consolatione philosophiae (The Consolation of Philosophy) while in prison, which is a collection of poetry and prose, and is widely read, with the theme of affirming fate by being guided by philosophy and recognizing the goodness of God and providence. He is famous for his theological treatises on the doctrine of the Trinity and the dual nature of Christ, and uses Aristotle's categories to elucidate theological problems. His logic books (translations and commentaries by Aristotle, Porphyrios, and others) are the best preserved, and although there are no translations of the complete works of Plato and Aristotle, which he is said to have intended, he was a man who conveyed ancient philosophy to the Middle Ages and provided basic tools for early medieval thought. Of his works on the four subjects (geometry, arithmetic, astronomy, and music), only "Course in Arithmetic" and "Course in Music" remain.
